What Motivates You

Author : Tim Connor
Are you waiting for the right time to be motivated?Everyone is motivated, even people who fail are motivated. People who succeed are motivated by positive things while failures are motivated by negative ones.As I look back over both my failures as well as my successes of the past I am amazed at how little difference there was between my actions and attitudes and the subsequent outcomes.Let me explain. When I failed (I really don't mind failing anymore because the only times I tend to learn anything is when things don't work) I discovered that there was a very fine line between failure and success. Success, for example, may have required only one extra sales call a week and failure only required that I not make it. I learned that the difference was that the price of failure is always higher than the price of success. The answer was in the "why". Why was I motivated at certain times to make the extra call and not motivated at other times? Was it:-desperation
-the fear of failure
-the need for approval
-the desire to win
-giving in to discouragement
-the hope of long term success
-or something or someone else…
Looking back, I can tell you that when I took control of my motivation and did not turn it over to my employer, boss, spouse, the economy or whatever – no matter whether I failed of succeeded – I always felt better about me, my life and my future. When I turned over the responsibility of motivating me to others I felt:-out of control
-used
-manipulated
-uncertain
-insecure
-and a whole bunch of other negative emotionsAre you consistently in charge of your motivation or have you turned it over to:-the future
-someone else
-the weather
-the day of the week
-the economy
-your employer
-your customers
-friends
-enemies
-or anyone or anything other than yourself?Tim Connor, CSP is an internationally renowned sales, management and leadership speaker, trainer and best selling author.
