More Students Put Off University Due To Rising Costs

Author : Lorna Casswell
Even more people are being put off university because of the rising costs and debts that come with higher education. A poll carried out by AnswerBank found that over 60 per cent of people are put off university because of the financial commitment. The findings came from a study of over 1,200 people and shows that Government attempts to ease the financial strain on students are not working. The burden of having huge debts is a deterrent for those who feel they could not afford the costs that come with having further education. The introduction of top-up fees this year has probably added to people's money worries. People starting university this autumn can expect to pay up to £3000 a year for their degree which is a massive increase on the £1,175 that was paid by students last year. This, as well as increased living costs means that student debts will average at around £18,000 after completing university.NatWest Student Money Matters found that the average salary of graduates has decreased from £14,090 in 2005 to only £13,860 this year. All of which has contributed to people shying away from higher education.Although any debts faced by students do not have to be paid back until after degree completion, it is a very daunting prospect to owe thousands of pounds. It is also another burden on parents who will undoubtedly have to fork out more money for sons and daughters in the hope of seeing them have a better career when finishing university.13 per cent of students said that missing family and friends puts them off going to university. Only 7 per cent of people polled said they were put off going to university because it may not be relevant to their future career.Visit
