Increase Traffic by Programming a Contest!

Author : Grady Smith

Visitors come to your site and don't buy on their first visit.<br>It often takes 6-7 visits before they buy. So, how do you get<br>their business if they don't come back? For that matter, how do<br>you get them to come back? <br><br>One answer is to run a contest. Not just any old contest will<br>do! It must be crafted to keep them returning again and again.<br>Lots of smart people will tell you that running a contest will<br>help but they don't tell you how to do it. Here's a blueprint<br>you can alter to suit your purposes. <br><br>Every aspect of the contest was handled by CGI scripts and a<br>couple of web pages. Even selecting the winner was done by a<br>script. This final script simply located the persons with the<br>most referrals. It drew one at random if there was a tie for<br>first place. <br><br>One of my clients came up with the basic idea and we developed<br>it together as a team. People would get one "entry" into the<br>contest when they signed up for one or more of his newsletters.<br>They would get another "entry" for each person they referred. <br><br>It was hugely successful. During the 60 days of the contest,<br>over 45,000 new people had subscribed to my client's<br>newsletters. They were coming back to his site over and over<br>again. Orders for ezine ads poured in. <br><br>At the end of the contest period a week-long cruise vacation to<br>Montego Bay, Jamaica was awarded to the winner. Generally, if<br>the prize is valued at over $500, some authorities in your state<br>may expect to be notified. There are various requirements; check<br>with the appropriate state agency for details. <br><br>We posted a complete set of rules for the contest on the Web<br>site. We announced the contest itself as well as the current<br>front-runners in each issue of my client's newsletters. <br><br>Each person entering the contest was assigned a Personal<br>Identification Number (PIN). The PIN was used to connect them<br>with their referrals. Next, a person was given the chance to<br>tell their friends about the contest. <br><br>We made everything as easy as possible for the contestants. All<br>they had to do was supply the email address and name and the<br>scripts did the rest. <br><br>They'd be shown the message that was about to be sent to their<br>friend. We were making every effort to be honest with them and<br>not cause any ill will. <br><br>When their friend(s) entered the contest, using a PIN we gave<br>them, their "referral count" would be be increased. To win, a<br>contestant had to get the most referrals. In the event of a<br>multi-person tie for first place, the software would<br>automatically conduct a random drawing. <br><br>During the contest, each contestant was able to use a special<br>Web page to monitor the contest. They'd see the top- ranked<br>contestants and the number of referrals each one had made. They<br>could log in with their PIN and see their own referrals, too. <br><br>They were able to come back to the site at any time and enter<br>new referrals. We added a small form that would look up their<br>PIN in case they'd forgotten it. They could send their own<br>emails to friends to tell them about the contest. They could<br>place ezines ads giving contest details and a PIN to use. <br><br>Keeping up with all those contestants, who they referred, how<br>many they referred, etc., was a job for a database engine. Since<br>we had MySQL on a server we controlled, we used that. The<br>scripting was done in Perl. <br><br>Two Perl modules were needed: DBI.pm and the MySQL module for<br>Perl. The modules are chunks of Perl code that let a script send<br>commands in SQL (the generic language of databases) from the<br>script to the MySQL database engine (program). <br><br>You can use a different database; you just need the the<br>database-specific module so Perl can "talk" to it through the<br>DBI module. DBI is needed regardless of which database you use.<br>Specific modules exist for Oracle, PostGres, etc. <br><br>We verified the email addresses of all the winner's referrals;<br>we would have to disqualify a contestant if any of the addresses<br>were faked - and award the prize to someone else. We designed<br>the code so that any attempts to cheat actually decreased your<br>odds of winning - and it was all automatic! <br><br>Thousands of names and email addresses are in the database. The<br>referral counts have been reset to zero and we are ready to<br>launch another contest at any time we choose. <br><br>The programming effort, for the most part is all done. We'll<br>just have to edit the contest page(s) and the rules page to<br>reflect the new prize and the new "start" and "end" dates. We<br>can easily get *at least* as large a subscriber boost with our<br>next contest! <br><br>Here's the bottom line: You'll get more visitors, and they'll<br>visit again and again. You get to show them your offer enough<br>times to win their business. No matter what product or service<br>you're selling, an automated referral contest is something you<br>should seriously consider. <br><br><br><p> About the Author <p>Steve Humphrey promises that you can learn to use CGI to turn<br>your own website into a marketing machine in two hours or less<br>with his excellent CGI learning system: Learn to Use CGI in 2<br>Hours. Hope: the Encourager

Author : ann Stewart

Hope is the master encourager. It nudges you forward; it keeps you anticipating the desired outcome. Hope is much more than 'a-hoping and a-praying', knock-on-wood, cross-your-fingers kind of wishful thinking. No! The Biblical Hope is the key to a healthy, happy, abundant life!Just imagine life without hope. Yes, millions of people are living in that desperate state. They are depressed, contemplating suicide, and suffering from physical and mental anguish. Without hope there can be no faith! "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Heb. 11:1) Therefore, if you're not hoping for something good to happen, how can your faith be put to work? Hope is the process of making the vision in your mind's eye a reality. It is knowing that God wants the very best for you and wants you to wait patiently for it. You know what you want. The more you start thinking about the desired outcome and speaking it out loud, the more real it becomes."Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life." (Prov. 13: 12) Do not ever let anyone talk you out of your desires. If you know that your desire is God's Will for your life, then faith kicks in and makes it happen! Hope is the process of expecting, building patience, and accessing the throne of God. If you are in a desperate situation right now, there is hope! "We glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience experience; and experience, hope; and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us." (Rom. 5: 3-5)Every single promise in the Bible is yours! Keep the vision of what you want to accomplish firm in your mind. Do as Abraham did. God swore to him that he would bless and multiply him. Abraham took His word and, "after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise." (Heb. 6: 14-15) How much more than, are you able to hope? Abraham took God's Word, started walking, and eventually found the place where God directed him. You will find your desired end if you walk according to God's Promises. However, you must start "walking!" You are led by the Holy Spirit. Leading someone implies that you are in motion. If a good job is your immediate goal, then go out on your quest to find it. Ask God to close the doors on those that are not his best for you, but open the door wide for the one He has waiting for you!Hope is the forerunner of faith. It is "an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast." (Heb. 6:19) Abraham walked in hope before he was ever the "father of faith." You were "saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it."As your Christian walk progresses, so does your love. Faith, hope and love are interconnected; but the greatest of these is love. (1Cor. 1, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for t3:13) Therefore, the more your love for Him grows, the more you hope, and the greater your faith becomes. Love "beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things." (1 Cor. 13:7)"Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost." (Rom. 15: 13) Author of With Wings As Eagles, a testimony of living a life of abundance and miracles. Her e-zine teaches how you can do the same: http://www.lifealteringwords.com

Meet Me in the Middle: 5 Reasons to Negotiate for Compromise

Author : Dina Giolitto
Hate to negotiate? Think you have to be a trickster to land that contract? Think again. Here's why honesty is always the best policy, even when you're swinging those big biz deals.1. Your future clients deserve a taste of what's to come.If compromise and cooperation are the name of your game, make that clear from the get-go... even in the pre-contract negotiation phase. Be open about your expectations; present yourself accurately and realistically. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. Your frankness will be rewarded.2. You reap what you sow.If you inflate your capabilities, you can bet it will come back to bite you in the hiney when you can't make good on your promises. Instead, be courteous to your future colleague and offer up-front honesty so that they can utilize every means to move the project forward.2. Slippery people fall through the cracks."Slippery" negotiators not only say one thing when they mean another, but they're notorious for saying two different things at two different times. A savvy businessperson will be able to spot inconsistencies in your claims... especially now that email correspondence means an easy conversation trail. Deceptive speech and weak character won't be lost on a prospective client. Be forthright and above all, be consistent.3. Contracts are born from a need for mutually beneficial relationships.Never accept a work offer without first determining its relevance for you. Contracts, after all, stem from mutual need. If the person with whom you're negotiating can't offer something beneficial, such as career growth or great pay, why would you accept their conditions? Likewise, if you're not the person for the job, they deserve to know and will appreciate your clarity in the matter.4. It's worth it to end the stalemate. A stalemate can work in two ways. In one scenario, you've negotiated a price and your potential client has countered, arms are crossed and neither of you are budging. In the other case, maybe you can't even GET to the money conversation because you're each waiting for the other to make a move. Either way, someone has to step up to the plate and state the case from both angles, then take a bold step forward or else make a permanent retreat.5. You never know when opportunity will come knocking again.Even if you don't end up contracting with said prospect, it behooves both parties to keep relations open and friendly. If you close the door on someone simply because they've decided not to work with you, you're letting your ego get the best of you and that's limiting. Keep the faith and be ready for future doors to open... perhaps with this person, or maybe an associate of theirs. In short: honesty is the best policy, and compromise is always the ultimate goal. Go for a win-win situation every time.Copyright 2005 Dina Giolitto. Spyware, Adware, And The Importance Of Cleaning The Registry

Author : Arvind Singh

Adware is a term that is frequently used to describe software that downloads and resides in the system and displays pop-up advertisements on the screen. There are many sites that allow users to download programs free of cost in return for permission for adware to installed on their system. This permission is, however, hidden somewhere in the terms and conditions or agreement the user agrees to at the time of downloading the software. Adware is also known as Spyware without the malicious streak. It just monitors the users activity on the Internet and the type of software the user uses on the computer. These non-malicious Spyware do, however, affect the smooth functioning of the computer by slowing down the system greatly and must be detected and removed. This can be done with the help of anti-Adware or anti-Spyware in addition the registry must also be cleaned of any entries of the software with the aid of free Spyware Adware removal software. Spyware With Malicious Intent.Spyware is Adware with malicious content. They operate in much the same way. However, Spyware actually spys on the user of a computer. Every time the user enters personal details such as credit card information or his username and password the Spyware will record the information and mail it to its masters. This information can be used to fraudulently cause financial damage to the user of the computer the Spyware is installed on. The registry of a computer proactively upgrades the information and data in its records. Every thing that happens on the computer is registered in the registry. This means that the Spyware is also entered in the registry as well and in hundreds of places too. These entries can only be removed effectively with free Spyware removal software such as free Microsoft Spyware Adware removal tool or the famous Yahoo Spyware Adware removal tool.Spyware Removal Utility Is Not EnoughSpyware, being designed to covertly install and operate on a system makes it very difficult to detect. One of the main indicators of the presence of Spyware on the system is the slowing of the system or pop-up advertisements. In order to collect data and send it to an email address through the Internet, Spyware must pause other programs already running. This is the reason the system slows. Removing Spyware using anti-Spyware tools is not enough because Spyware expects such action and so installs links in different parts of the registry as well. To remove these links from the registry one must use special Spyware removal programs. Many Free Spyware removal tools do a good job efficiently cleaning the registry and remove all traces of Spyware. About Writing

Author : Michael LaRocca
Here's everything I know about improving your writing,
publishing it electronically and in print, and promoting it
after the sale. Two questions you should ask:(1) What will it cost me?(2) What does this Michael LaRocca guy know about it?Answer #1 -- It won't cost you a thing. The single most
important bit of advice I can give you, and I say it often, is
don't pay for publication. My successes have come from investing time. Some of it was well
spent, but most of it was wasted. It costs me nothing to share
what I've learned. It costs you nothing to read it except some
of your time.Answer #2 -- "Michael LaRocca has been researching the
publishing field for over ten years."This quote, from an ezine (electronic newsletter) called Authors
Wordsmith, was a kind way of saying I've received a lot of
rejections. Also, my "research" required 20 years. But in my "breakout" year (2000), I finished writing four books
and scheduled them all for publication in 2001. I also began
editing for one of my publishers, a job I've been enjoying ever
since. After my first book was published, both my publishers closed.
Two weeks and three publishers later, I was back on track. All
four books were published, and a fifth was released in 2004.
Written in 2003, no rejections. Another scheduled for 2005
publication, no rejections.See how much faster it was the second time around? That's
because I learned a lot.Also, I found more editing jobs. That's what I do when I'm not
writing, doing legal transcription, or teaching English in China
(my new home). But the thing is, if I'd become an editor before
learning how to write, I'd have stunk.2005 EPPIE Award finalist. 2004 EPPIE Award finalist. 2002 EPPIE
Award finalist. Listed by Writers Digest as one of The Best 101
Websites For Writers in 2001 and 2002. Sime-Gen Readers Choice
Awards for Favorite Author (Nonfiction & Writing) and Favorite
Book (Nonfiction & Writing). 1982 Who's Who In American Writing.Excuse me for bragging, but it beats having you think I'm
unqualified.I'll tell you what's missing from this course. What to write
about, where I get my ideas from, stuff like that. Maybe I don't
answer this question because I think you should do it your way,
not mine. Or maybe because I don't know how I do it. Or maybe
both.Once you've done your writing, this course will help you with
the other stuff involved in being a writer. Writing involves
wearing at least four different hats. Writer, editor,
publication seeker, post-sale self-promoter.Here's what I can tell you about my writing.Sometimes an idea just comes to me out of nowhere and refuses
to leave me alone until I write about it. So, I do.And, whenever I read a book that really fires me up, I think, "I
wish I could write like that." So, I just keep trying. I'll never
write THE best, but I'll always write MY best. And get better
every time. That's the "secret" of the writing "business," same as
any other business. Always deliver the goods.I read voraciously, a habit I recommend to any author who
doesn't already have it. You'll subconsciously pick up on what
does and doesn't work. Characterization, dialogue, pacing, plot,
story, setting, description, etc. But more importantly, someone
who doesn't enjoy reading will never write something that someone
else will enjoy reading.I don't write "for the market." I know I can't, so I just write
for me and then try to find readers who like what I like. I'm
not trying to whip up the next bestseller and get rich. Not that
I'd complain. But I have to write what's in my heart, then find a
market later. It makes marketing a challenge at times, but I
wouldn't have it any other way. When you write, be a dreamer. Go nuts. Know that you're writing
pure gold. That fire is why we write. An author I admire, Kurt Vonnegut, sweats out each individual
sentence. He writes it, rewrites it, and doesn't leave it alone
until it's perfect. Then when he's done, he's done.I doubt most of write like that. I don't. I let it fly as fast
as my fingers can move across the paper or keyboard, rushing to
capture my ideas before they get away. Later, I change and
shuffle and slice.James Michener writes the last sentence first, then has his goal
before him as he writes his way to it.Then there's me. No outline whatsoever. I create characters
and conflict, spending days and weeks on that task, until the
first chapter leaves me wondering "How will this end?" Then my
characters take over, and I'm as surprised as the reader when I
finish my story. Some authors set aside a certain number of hours every day for
writing, or a certain number of words. In short, a writing
schedule. Then there's me. No writing for three or six months, then a
flurry of activity where I forget to eat, sleep, bathe, change
the cat's litter... I'm a walking stereotype. To assuage the
guilt, I tell myself that my unconscious is hard at work. As
Hemingway would say, long periods of thinking and short periods
of writing.I've shown you the extremes in writing styles. I think most
authors fall in the middle somewhere. But my point is, find out
what works for you. You can read about how other writers do it,
and if that works for you, great. But in the end, find your own
way. That's what writers do.Just don't do it halfway. If you're doing what I do, writing a story that entertains and
moves you, you'll find readers who share your tastes. For some
of us that means a niche market and for others it means regular
appearances on the bestseller list.Writing is a calling, but publishing is a business. Remember
that AFTER you've written your manuscript. Not during.I've told you how I write. For me.** EDITING **The next step is self-editing. Fixing the mistakes I made in my
rush to write it before my Muse took a holiday. Several
rewrites. Running through it repeatedly with a fine-toothed
comb and eliminating cliches like "fine-toothed comb."Then what? There are stories that get rejected because the potential
publisher hates them, but more are shot down for other reasons.
Stilted dialogue. Boring descriptions. Weak characters.
Underdeveloped story. Unbelievable or inconsistent plot. Sloppy
writing. That's what you have to fix.I started by using Free Online Creative Writing Workshops. What
I needed most was input from strangers. After all, once you're
published, your readers will be strangers. Every publisher you
submit to will be a stranger. What will they think? I always get
too close to my writing to answer that.Whenever I got some advice, I considered it. Some I just threw
out as wrong, or because I couldn't make the changes without
abandoning part of what made the story special to me. Some I
embraced. But the point is, I decided. It's my writing. After a time, I didn't feel the need for the workshops anymore.
I'm fortunate enough to have a wife whose advice I will always
treasure, and after a while that was all I needed. But early
on, it would've been unfair to ask her to read my drivel. (Not
that I didn't anyway, but she married me in spite of it.)Your goal when you self-edit is to get your book as close to
"ready to read" as you possibly can. Do not be lazy and do not
rush. You want your editor to find what you overlooked, not what
you didn't know about, and you want it to be easy for him/her.Your story is your story. You write it from your heart, and
when it looks like something you'd enjoy reading, you set out to
find a publisher who shares your tastes. What you don't want is
for that first reader to lose sight of what makes your story
special because you've bogged it down with silly mistakes.Authors don't pay to be published. They are paid for publication.
Always. It's just that simple. Later, I'll tell you where to get
some free editing. But there's a limit to how much editing you can
get without paying for it. Do you need more than that? I don't
know because I've never read your writing. But if you evaluate it
honestly, I think you'll know the answer. As an editor, I've worked with some authors who simply couldn't
self-edit. Non-native English speakers, guys who slept through
English class, whatever. To them, paying for editing was an
option. This isn't paying for publication. This is paying for
a service, training. Just like paying to take a Creative Writing
class at the local community college.By the way, I don't believe creativity can be taught. Writing,
certainly. I took a Creative Writing class in high school, free,
and treasure the experience. But I already had the creativity,
or else it would've been a waste of the teacher's time and mine.If you hire an editor worthy of the name, you should learn from
that editor how to self-edit in the future. In my case it took
two tries, because my first "editor" was a rip-off artist
charging over ten times market value for incomplete advice. That editor, incidentally, is named Edit Ink, and they're listed
on many "scam warning" sites. They take kickbacks from every fake
agent who sends them a client. (I'll talk about fake agents later.)If you choose to hire an editor, check price and reputation. (For a
ballpark figure, I charge $3 per 1000 words for a proofread, twice
that for an in-depth edit.) Consider that you might never make
enough selling your books to get back what you pay that editor. Do
you care? That's your decision.Your first, most important step on the road to publication is to
make your writing the best it can be.** PUBLICATION **My goal is to be published in both mediums, ebook and print.
There are some readers who prefer ebooks, and some who prefer
print books. The latter group is larger, but those publishers
are harder to sell your writing to. I want to be published in
both mediums, because I want all the readers I can get. Thus, I advocate something of a stepping-stone approach.
Publish electronically with a quality place, and enjoy the
benefits of free editing. Later, if you think you can sell
your book to a traditional print publisher, you have a
professionally edited manuscript to submit. Free editing. Before you epublish, check the contract to be sure you can
publish the edited work in print later. If you know your book just plain won't ever make it into
traditional print, print-on-demand (POD) is an option. Some
of my books fall into this category. The best epublishers will
simultaneously publish your work electronically and in POD
format, at no cost to you.A lot of authors swear by self-publication, but the prospect
just plain scares me. All that promo, all that self-editing,
maybe driving around the countryside with a back seat full of
books. I'm a writer, not a salesman. Maybe you're different.I self-published once, in the pre-POD days. Mom handled the
sales. I had fun and broke even. With POD, at least it's
easier (and probably cheaper) to self-publish than it was in
1989, because you'll never get stuck with a large unsold
inventory.POD setup fees can range anywhere from US$100 to over $1000.
Don't pay the higher price! Price shop. Also, remember that
POD places publish any author who pays, giving them a real
credibility problem with some reviewers and readers, and that
they do no marketing.** PROMOTING YOUR PUBLISHED WRITING **It doesn't matter how you publish your book. Self-published,
epublished, POD, or traditional print publishing from a small
press or an absolute powerhouse. Marketing falls largely on you,
and the same things always work. Book signings, book reviews and
interviews in the local newspapers and on radio. (Or Oprah,
but what are our chances?)Start with http://www.kidon.com/media-link/index.shtml. It will
allow you to look up all the local media outlets in your area
that have websites. If you write to them all, you're a spammer. Plus, it'll take
ages. Look for the ones with a legitimate interest and fire
away.If you find a stale URL, and I think you will, look for the name
of that media outlet at some place like Google. Spend some time
looking for the right press contacts, spend some time writing
your press release, and do what you can. Most of these sites list email, snail mail, and phone numbers.
Since I live in China, I've only used email.Book reviews, author interviews, book listing sites, and book
contests are something we can all do, regardless of where we
live.HOW TO GET PUBLISHED (my free ebook) contains my list of
resources. http://www.chinarice.org/howtogetpublished.htmlSome of the sites I mention review ebooks, and some do not. The
POD option can help e-authors here, but balance cost vs.
likelihood of gaining enough readers to offset that cost. Some are ezines and some are websites. Some are printed
newsletters, some are printed magazines, and some are
newspapers. This is just a starting point. If you visit them
all, and you have time for more promotion, you can find many
more.Aside from two radio interviews and a seminar in Hong Kong, and
some emailed press releases to the LOCAL media back in the US
which may or may not have succeeded in anything, my marketing
has come from the Internet.I have a website. I have a newsletter. I write free articles
such as this one. I give away a free ebook, the essence of which
you're reading now. You found me somehow, right? Here's the type of message I receive often in email. To be more
precise, in spam."If a million people see your ad, and you get 1% of them, that's10,000 readers and therefore $15,000 profit and you only paid
$1000 for those million addresses."NO!! It doesn't work that way. Need I use the words dot-com
bust?My website is free. My newsletter is free. I don't buy mailing
lists, I don't harvest email addresses, and I don't spam. I
want interested traffic, not just sheer numbers.Do you think the Phoenicians tried to sell sails to people a
thousand miles from water?Internet marketing isn't a replacement for the methods mentioned
above, but a complement to them. And by using it, I got you here.Your goal in marketing is this. There are people in the world who
like what you like. And since you like your book, they probably
will too. You have to find those readers and make them interested,
without spamming them and without "playing the numbers game."If you're an e-author, let me state the obvious. Nobody buys
ebooks who doesn't have Internet access. Do they? So you
definitely need a website.Traditional print authors need websites too. Even blockbuster
authors like J.R. Rowling and Stephen King, who I doubt could
garner any more name recognition, have websites. So does every
long-established inescapable monstro-business like McDonalds and
Coke.Okay, those folks pay web designers. I'm not doing that. I can't
generate sales like that. And yes, I've been employed as an HTML
programmer. But you can write your own website without learning
HTML if you want. It's no harder than writing a manuscript with
a word processor.It won't be super-flashy like the big boys, but it'll
communicate the information. Remember, you can communicate.
You're an author! That's what keeps people coming back to a
website after the thrill of the flash wears off. Information.
Content. Your specialty.I consider my website and my newsletter to be successful, and I've
analyzed how they got that way, in the free ebook I mentioned above.
There are legitimate ways to bring traffic to your website and your
newsletter. Not massive numbers overnight, but slow steady growth over
the long term. http://www.chinarice.org/howtogetpublished.html** CLOSING THOUGHTS **Here's something you've heard before. When your manuscript is
rejected -- and it will be -- remember that you aren't being
rejected. Your manuscript is.One reader took me to task for that statement, claiming he'd
never been rejected. I'm very happy for him. But why, if I may be
so bold as to ask, would he need advice on "How To Get Published?"
I'd rather he write some advice so I can hang up my "helper guy"
hat and learn from a master. But I digress. You aren't being rejected. Your manuscript is.Did you ever hang up the phone on a telemarketer, delete spam,
or close the door in the face of a salesman? Of course, and yet
that salesman just moves on to the next potential customer. He
knows you're rejecting his product, not him.Okay, in my case I'm rejecting both, but I'd never do that to an
author. Neither will a publisher or an agent. All authors tell
other authors not to take rejection personally, and yet we all
do. Consider it a target to shoot for, then. Just keep
submitting, and just keep writing. The best way to cope with waiting times is to "submit and
forget," writing or editing other stuff while the time passes. And finally, feel free to send an e-mail to me anytime.

I'll gladly share what I know with you, and it won't cost you a

Mad Cow NOT Bad Cow!

Author : Jan McCracken

I dont know which of the biggest headlines are being read right now Mad Cow or New Diets for a New Year (but I have my suspicions!). HOWEVER ~ lets look a little further at REAL statistics and do a little common sense comparison here (by the way, common sense seems to have disappeared completely in this great land of ours)! We look at the number of deaths in the all-out Mad Cow epidemic, if you will, in Britain number of deaths connected to it approximately 130. Shall we just mention here the deaths that we are suffering RIGHT NOW from diabetes and obesity? So lets have a little closer look at that big animal in those green fields, contently chewing his cud and rolling those big, brown eyes Some of you will get to this part of this article and toss it so have a nice day! Some others of you will be curious and continue to read How much do you know about our friend the cow? Ill bet not much except that you prefer rib eye steak over NY Strip and that you buy hamburger when it is on sale and, and, and Do you know the nutritional value that the cow brings to us? In addition to proteins, iron, zinc and vitamins B6 and B12, beef contains omega-3 fatty acids that are essential for life and gives us strong protection and immunities from vascular diseases! Our friends, the cows, were designed to eat grasses and grains that were also designed for our diets! HOWEVER ~ our Creator made the COW very special! What do you know about a cows stomach? Did you know that a cows stomach contains four rumination pouches that secrete many kinds of bacteria in digesting the grasses and grains that a cow eats? You say, who cares? Well, let me tell you that we should care and why these bacteria in the digestion process in the cow are competing during the process for nutrients, nutrients, utrients! In this miraculous process harmful bacteria is crowded out parasites are destroyed viruses are obliterated and nasty toxins are literally knocked out BEFORE they reach the very flesh of the COW! The awesome design of the digestive system of the cow brings to us flesh with purified nutrients! In turn, our consumption of COWS that have been range-fed, organic and chemical free protect us from harmful effects of triglycerides and cholesterol! Now I am REALLY going to lose some readers as most of us know, in nutrition, meats are great sources of complete protein. However, because hormones, antibiotics and pesticides enter the picture of raising beef the Great Design of the Creator is altered. This is NOT the way it was meant to be. My message to you: Dont throw the baby out with the bath water!I found a great quote from What the Bible Says About Healthy Living by Rex Russell, MD, that I would like to share with you: Maybe its time to get off our rump roast and eat more of everything God created for food. ~ Rex Russell, MD Jan McCracken <a href="http://lowcarbcookin.com" target=new>http://lowcarbcookin.com</a> Author, Low Carb Christmas Cookin COMING SOON: Low Carb Everyday Cookin <a href="mailto:jan@lowcarbcookin.com">jan@lowcarbcookin.com</a> Jan McCracken is author and self-publisher of 39 gift books and cookbooks. Never Run Out of Altitude, Airspeed, and Ideas at the Same Time: Lessons From the Vietnam POWs

Author : Linda Henman
Bosses can't control many things at work. In fact, they probably can't control most things, but they can control their own reactions to unfortunate events, and they can help their direct reports feel authority over their reactions to unpleasant and unexpected changes. When hard times rear their ugly heads, the boss has to be a kind of hero, the rescuer who looks after others and helps them keep from losing their perspective and their coping resources. Becoming aware of the value of humor can increase our understanding of the powerful role mirth and laughter can play in helping us bounce back from hardships, and in turn, help others cope with adversity. In other words, humor can give us a bit of control in situations when we would otherwise feel as though we had no power over our destiny. The Vietnam POWs:Why do some people conquer adversity, and others are immobilized by it? The Vietnam POWs offer some answers. In 1973, 566 Vietnam POWs were repatriated to the United States. Evidence from prior captivity situations indicated a high incidence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Fifty to eighty-two percent of the WWII POWs who were studied, particularly those who were imprisoned in the Pacific Theatre, have had a diagnosis of PTSD. Forty-seven to ninety percent of the Korean POWs who were studied have received a diagnosis of PTSD. Because of these staggering numbers, in 1976, the Navy started to study 138 repatriated Vietnam POW. In 1996, they reached surprising conclusions. In their 20-year follow-up, they found that only about 4% of the Vietnam prisoners of war had received a diagnosis of PTSD.This is astonishing when comparing the Vietnam group to the other captivity situations, but it is also shocking in light of the implications of these numbers. To give a frame of reference for understanding this, at any given time in a metropolitan area, about 1-4% of the population is walking around with PTSD because of violent crime, natural disasters, or other kinds of trauma. In other words, this group of people, who was imprisoned at least 5 years and as long as for seven or eight years, who was tortured, isolated, and beaten, had no higher incidence of PTSD than the average people in the average city in America. How can that be?The study participants indicated that there were four main forces in the POWs' lives that helped them remain resilient: a belief in God, patriotism, a dedication to something bigger than they were, and a sense of humor. These men personified the importance of never losing altitude, airspeed, and ideas at the same time, and humor played a huge role in their ability to keep all three.Even though their captivity indicated that they had all run out of altitude, airspeed, and ideas at the same time in a realistic sense, in a metaphorical or psychological sense, they were able to sustain all three. Great bosses are people who don't run out of altitude, airspeed, and ideas at the same time; they are people who can stay resilient in difficult times and help their direct reports do the same.Altitude:People want power and authority over their futures. When we perceive that our actions will make an outcome likely, we feel optimistic and secure. When we don't, we feel insecure. We feel like victims. Sometimes people stay in a victim's frame of mind after a loss or disappointment. They doubt their capacity to make their lives happen according to their own aspirations, so they wait to be rescued or blessed by good fortune. They start to feel undermined and overwhelmed; and they can become totally immobilized. But the VPOWs weren't victims. They were certainly victimized by their captors, but they never saw themselves as victims, no matter what was done to them. They weren't victims because they took control of the few things they could control. They were told when and what and if they could eat; they were told if and when they could shower, sleep, and use the toilet. They had no say about parts of their lives that people normally take for granted. But they did have control over one thing, and that was their humor perspective, a way of looking at things that allowed them to keep their "altitude."In a physical sense, altitude is the elevation of an object above a certain level, usually the earth. Therefore, "altitude" as it applies to leadership, is a global perspective, a realization that there is a bigger picture and no one person is the center of the universe. When bosses indicate that they have altitude, they usually exhibit these behaviors:· Vision, an ability to see the future and to anticipate consequences.· Critical thinking—the capability to go into uncharted territory. Managers have the ability to do the right thing well; leaders have the ability to figure out what the right thing is.· The ability to prioritize, to do first things first and to separate important from unimportant uses of time.· The motivation to look beyond the obvious.· The skills to paint credible pictures of possibilities.· An eagerness to create competitive strategies.Admiral Stockdale was one of the senior leaders of the POWs. He had the Code of Conduct to rely on to help him keep his global perspective, but no prisoners had experienced what these men were suffering. So, he issued orders for them to resist but not to risk permanent physical or psychological harm. He thought he'd be court marshaled. Instead, he will live in military history as a hero who was responsible for saving the lives of many and ensuring the resilience of hundreds of others."Leadership" does not always come from the leader, however. One of the stories that lives in the POW histories and clearly illustrates the importance of keeping altitude involved a lieutenant who had been shot down in an F-4 Phantom. He was tortured to force him to give the maximum airspeed of the F-4. He told them the top speed of the F-4 was 500 knots, a number that is much lower than the actual maximum speed. The captors said they knew he was lying because a major had just told them that the speed was closer to Mach 2. Thinking quickly, and trying to avoid torture for himself and the major, he said, "Well, that guys is a major. I'm only a lieutenant. They don't let lieutenants fly as fast as they let majors fly."By keeping his wits about him, this young lieutenant was able to anticipate the consequences of his answer and to venture into uncharted territory, something that training had not prepared him for. He wasn't trying to be funny, but stories of his quick wit soon spread throughout the POW community and validated their awareness that through humor, they could claim some control over what was happening. Aviators understand altitude in a real and a metaphorical sense, and bosses can learn to too.
During times of adversity, there is much we can't control, but our global perspective, our altitude, is one thing we can take charge of.Airspeed:Airspeed is velocity, the force that make us go forward. Relationships are one of the main sources of fuel that helps successful bosses accelerate their productivity and that of others. The boss who avoids running out of airspeed tends to have these traits:· A knack for building relationships· A strong motivation to follow through· A willingness and availability to listen· A genuine interest in people· The capacity to convey respect for people and their ideas· The confidence to tell people what they need to know, not just what they want to hear.Communication is the primary tool that helps us form relationships and develop closeness in our personal and professional lives. For the VPOWs, however, communication was difficult and sometimes nearly impossible. Yet, it became a priority. In 1965, a man named Bob Shumaker realized that the POWs were going to need a communication system. Bob Shumaker had gone 133 days without face-to-face contact with another American. For over four months, Bob Shumaker was in solitary confinement, but he knew there was another American in the complex, because he had seen him: Hayden Lockhart. All of the POWs emptied their waste buckets in the same latrine area. Through the cracks in his walls, Bob Shumaker had seen another American there, and he knew he needed to make contact with this other American. But he wasn't sure how he wanted to do this. Finally, he decided that he would write a note on toilet paper.Bob Shumaker decided to write a three word note on a scrap of toilet paper and hide it behind a piece of cement in the latrine. He had to be very careful about what he wrote on this piece of toilet paper-it couldn't be very much and it had to be the exact words that he needed to say. On this scrap of toilet paper Bob Shumaker wrote three words, three words that in essence said, "scratch your area where your mother specifically told you not to scratch in public."His thinking was two-fold. First of all, he wanted to write something that an American would know only another American would write so that the person receiving the three word note would not suspect duplicity. Second, he wanted to devise a signal that would not arouse suspicion in the captors. He wrote the note on the scrap of toilet paper, and day after day, he stood peeking through the cracks in his room, and day after day, Hayden Lockhart came out of the latrine and made no signal. Finally, one day, Hayden Lockhart came out and made a huge display of scratching the region in question and facing every part of the compound. The communication system was born. However, even though they had created a way of communication, they realized its limitations and knew they would have to have other ways of communicating.Shortly after this, Bob Shumaker was given some roommates. One of them, Smitty Harris, remembered the "tap code" that he had learned from a survival school that he had attended. Because they could tap almost all of the time, the Tap Code became the most sophisticated communication system that they had. Originally, this was devised to be a communication system for getting policy throughout the POW camp, but it quickly became a way for staying connected to one another, keeping morale up, and for sharing jokes. The Tap Code is a 25-letter alphabet that uses the "C" and "K" interchangeably. It was an arduous task to tap a message one letter at a time, but they quickly became proficient at the code and spent hours each day committed to staying in touch with each other. The captors soon realized there was a communication system, so they tortured Stockdale to give up the system and the players in the system. They tortured him one day almost to his breaking point with the promise that if he did not tell them what they wanted to know the next day, they would do it to him again. Knowing that he was close to capitulating, Stockdale went back to his cell that night, broke a window, took a shard of glass, and cut his wrists. He had been willing to die to protect the communication system. The next morning, the captors found him in a pool of his own blood, unconscious, and they never tortured him again. Stockdale knew that he was protecting something vital when he attempted to end his life for the sake of a communication system that the POWs would need to stay resilient and hardy.Relationships, communication, closeness, and humor, all of these are fuel for us, airspeed that keeps us going through adversity and helps us help others too. The Vietnam POWs literally risked their lives to stay connected to each other, but how often do we walk past the desk of a co-worker, too busy to even risk losing a minute of our day to stay connected? A global perspective helps us realize that we aren't the center of the universe and that our problems pale in comparison to those of some others, and communicating with those that we care about helps us keep this perspective. Altitude and airspeed are two critical elements for success, but there's one more: IdeasIdeas:Creative problem solving is probably one of the most essential talents a leader can possess. Bosses who can look at diverse information and see relationships, who can reason abstractly and make logical connections, and who can think of the future as open and malleable bring an invaluable asset to their organizations: ideas. When leaders have ideas, they can solve the unfamiliar problems they encounter and make decisions that are in the best interest of their direct reports and the organization because of these skills:· An openness to brainstorming and creativity· The motivation and enthusiasm to challenge existing processes· A knack for inviting input from a variety of perspectives· A willingness to experiment with novel approaches and champion innovationThe POWs found themselves in an drastically altered world, one that they had never encountered before and, in spite of some training, one for which they were ill prepared. But like great leaders throughout history, they had the ability to engage in creative problem solving. They had ideas.
One of the classic stories of the POWs that illustrates this willingness to experiment with novel approaches involved Jerry Venanzi and his motorcycle, a story that quickly became a legend in the POW community. One day, Jerry Venanzi was outside when he noticed some of the other POWs were staked out and being treated miserably. He did not have any control over how he could help his fellow POWs, except he thought he might be able to make them laugh, so he decided to try that.Putting his brilliant idea into action, he created an imaginary motorcycle, which he got on and rode around the compound. His fellow POWs started to laugh. Being somewhat of a ham, Jerry Venanzi realized that this idea was indeed funny, so he'd stage a spill, feign an injury, and limp. He'd hobble over and show somebody how he'd gotten a burn or some other kind of injury from the motorcycle. His act was so convincing that some of the POWs started to tap to one another, "Has Venanzi lost it?"One of the things that the POWs found most humorous, however, was that the commander of the compound finally called Jerry Venanzi in and told him that he had to get rid of the motorcycle. As the commander pointed out, it wasn't fair. All the POWs couldn't have motorcycles so; Jerry Venanzi shouldn't be able to have a motorcycle either. So, he reluctantly got rid of his imaginary motorcycle. However, since he was disappointed about the loss of the motorcycle and since he was in solitary confinement, Jerry Venanzi decided to create an imaginary companion, a monkey that he called Barney Google. The stories of Barney Google went like wildfire through the community because Barney became the voice of the POWs. Jerry Venanzi would take his imaginary monkey into what was called an interrogation, and, as he was being asked questions, he would turn to the imaginary monkey and say "NO! I'm not going to tell them that! Because, if I tell them that, they'll beat the hell outta me! You're just going to have to shut up." The interrogator would then say, "What did he say?" Who was in charge of this interrogation? Jerry Venanzi would seize this opportunity to say, "He's sick of the food. It's lousy food and he's tired of it. We don't have enough blankets, we're freezing to death," Whatever their complaint was, Barney said it on their behalf.During one interrogation, the camp commander offered Barney tea, which Jerry Venanzi declined on behalf of Barney, pointing out that Barney didn't like tea. This ruse continued for quite a some time, all the while fueling the POWs' feelings of having some degree of control, if only to their reactions and their openness to finding way to be connected to one another.
Finally, one day, the captors once again called Jerry Venanzi in and said that he would have to get rid of the dirty animal because he was getting some roommates. They were certain the roommates wouldn't like the dirty animal. Of course Venanzi disagreed, but he finally capitulated and let Barney go on to another life outside the walls of the Hanoi Hilton, but Venanzi's idea lived on ideas are certainly critical for leaders, but leadership is not only about position, experience, knowledge, and education. It's also about the willingness to experiment with ideas to help solve problems that no one has encountered before. Certainly Jerry Venanzi was a person who assumed this leadership function. Doug Hegdahl was another, but he was barely old enough to be considered a man.
Doug Hegdahl was a 19-year old seaman who, in violation of policy, went out on a ship during a thunderstorm and was washed overboard. A Viet-Cong fishing boat picked him up and took him to the Hanoi Hilton. However, he wasn't like the other prisoners that were there. He was the only non-aviator, and he was only a teenager. He quickly realized that he could trick the captors into thinking he was dim-witted or stupid because he couldn't have answered any of the questions they asked him, even if he wanted to. He did not know about flying; he did not know about targets; he did not know the answers to any of their questions. Since his captors were confused about this very different kind of prisoner, Hegdahl had an idea.To create more confusion for the guards, he started sucking on a pen and getting ink all over himself. When they asked him to write a propaganda statement, he would ask them how to spell a word, such as "American." Hegdahl's ruse had immediate and enormous implications. The captors underestimated him and made the tactical error of putting him a cell of one of the POW leaders, Dick Stratton.Dick Stratton groomed Doug Hegdahl, and Stockdale, the acting senior leader, ordered Hegdahl to take the early release the Vietnamese had offered this seemingly simple-minded child. As the only person who was authorized to accept early release, Hegdahl returned home with 200 names, went to the Paris Peace talks, and told about the mistreatment of the POWs. In the archives of military history, a 19-year old Navy Seaman is one of the most heroic figures. This 19 year old teenager never ran out of ideas, but neither did he run out of altitude or airspeed. Through his involvement in a well-defined system, he was able to remain resilient and healthy and to ensure the safe return of many of his fellow POWs.Conclusion:The need for control served as a framework for the VPOWs who created and maintained a system of strong interpersonal relationships and group affiliation that helped them survive over seven years in captivity and thrive during the years since repatriation. Humor was one of the elements of this system. The VPOWs taught each other how to use humor as a weapon for fighting back and as a tool for building cohesion. To prevent a disjunction of the self and to find meaning in a situation void of meaning, the VPOWs relied on resources many of them did not know they had. Their internal sense of mirth and humor, their reliance on one another, and their group interactions all combined to create a system for survival. Their humor perspective provided the framework for discovering how to cope with their captivity, and their commitment to one another other gives an important perspective about what coping is made of. The role humor can play in bouncing back from adversity, especially when we are linked to others who will help us laugh, seems critical.Because they were cemented in a strong social structure, they had a buffer against fragmentation of self or of the system. The VPOW accounts indicate these men formed a system that defined and encouraged humor among the group's members. These men relied on humor not in spite of the crisis but because of it. The VPOWs' system was a powerful civilizing force that discouraged any antisocial slip into a kind of jungle mentality. Control is central to individuals' health, their personal benefits, and in the case of the Vietnam POWs, their actual survival.Dr. Linda Henman speaks from experience. A Look at Foam Mattresses

Author : Eric Morris

We?ve all been there. First, we spend a sleepless night, tossing and turning. Then we spend the next two days with body aches, sore from head to toe. The effects of a bad mattress can be serious. Then we face the daunting prospect of shopping for a new mattress. This task can be a bit intimidating. There are so many different prices, sizes, styles, and firmness to choose from. They come in drastically different materials, as well. Mattresses can be filled with air, water, fabric, feathers, springs or foam. One of the most popular -- especially for people suffering body pain -- is the foam mattress.Foam mattresses are popular because of their body-contouring nature. The foam literally reshapes to mold to the user?s body. This is designed to strategically place pressure where needed, while relieving the strain on other points. It is believed that this relieves pressure from the neck, spine, and lower back, eliminating much of the soreness and pain associated with regular mattresses. The foam mattress is not entirely without drawbacks, though. Some people complain about the body-contouring nature that it?s famous for. If, for some reason, you are not happy with the newly molded shape, you cannot change it. Some reports also say that the foam loses resiliency quickly. Others complain that the foam gets extremely hot, causing sweating and clamminess. Despite these complaints, many people do prefer foam mattresses. If, after doing research, you decide to buy a foam mattress, they are available from most bedding stores. Some of the more popular foam mattresses are the Sealy Reflexion, the Tempur-Pedic, and the Isoform.A-Bed offers a memory foam bed by Dormia. The Versailles by Dormia is offered for $447, including shipping.Foam Order offers foam mattress pads. These fit on top of your existing mattress to create a body-contouring surface. They start at $248 for a Queen sized 3-inch pad. Foam Order also offers a selection of foam mattresses. Mattresses Info provides detailed information about air, foam, memory foam, futon, and waterbed mattresses and mattress pads, plus advice about mattress stores. Modern Bedding Will Give Your Bedroom the Facelift it Needs Without Costing You a Fortune

Author : Chris Rodriguez
Modern bedding is quite different than the bedding made 20 or 30 years ago. So much has changed in the world of bedding over the past couple of decades that many people find it hard to keep up with all the changes. Mattress sizes have changed over the years and in doing so, sheet sizes have also had to change in order to fit them. Patterns and styles of bedding have also evolved into beautiful and contemporary styles and designs that can turn your bedroom into something you'd see in a magazine. The need for modern bedding became quite apparent when the new thicker mattresses came out. Mattress companies listened to the needs of the public and began creating mattresses with pillow tops, memory foam tops, and feather tops. Or you can just buy these bed toppers separately for the added comfort. The only problem is that once you've covered your bed with all these fancy toppers, your sheets won't fit. Hence the need for modern bedding. Today's contemporary sheets and bedding are designed to meet the needs of those people with 17 or 18 inch mattresses. It used to be that you would need those inconvenient elastic pieces to attach to the corners of your sheet and then tuck under the mattress, but not anymore. Today's modern fitted sheets come in a variety of sizes so that you can find one that will fit snuggly on the corners of your mattress. If you want to update your whole bed including pillow shams, duvet, sheets, and the bedskirt, then maybe a modern bed in a bag set is the way to go. Everything comes in one bag so you don't have to worry about mismatching. Bed making has become so much easier!!Not only have the bed sheets evolved to fit today's mattresses, but the styles and patterns are absolutely stunning. Today's modern bed linens are so incredibly rich and elegant looking that you can turn your room into a royal retreat. Gorgeous satins and silks, and jacquards and tapestries are just some of the materials used to make contemporary bedding. But don't stop there. Soft flannel sheets made from extravagant Egyptian cotton used to be out of reach for most people as they were so expensive, but with the ability to do online shopping, prices for this luxury bedding have come way down. It's now possible for everyone to enjoy today's modern and sophisticated bed linens. Or if you prefer, perhaps something a touch more simplistic such as stripes or solid colors is the type of modern linens you're after.Update your bedroom with modern bed linens and you will see that just a small update like changing your duvet cover and pillow shams can really modernize your room. Toss in some decorative pillows and maybe a throw blanket and your tired bedroom will look fresh and revived. Give it a try and you'll see what I mean!Chris Rodriguez is the author for http://www.luxurious-bedding.com Please visit her sight to discover a wealth of information on deluxe bed linens by designers such as Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley, Nautica, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Croscill, Waverly, and more. The Importance of Electricians

Author : Elizabeth Morgan

Ever since Benjamin Franklin went outside with his kite during a thunderstorm, electricity has ruled the world. All you have to do to understand this is to remember what it was like the last time your power went out for an evening. Nothing worked. No computer, no refrigerator and more importantly, no TV. Electricity runs everything important in our lives and when it malfunctions, somebody has to fix it, somebody who knows what they?re doing, that is. Electricity has the power to run things when it works smoothly, but, it can also burn things and kill people if misused. Of all the household accidents in this country, home electrical repairs ranks second in accidents right behind falling off ladders - only home electrical repair accidents are more deadly than falling off ladders.Good electricians are highly trained individuals with a lot of schooling and practical experience behind them. Before you go sticking your hand into a fuse box, or rewiring the house for power, you have to know a lot about electrical power ? the way it moves, how it does what it does, the math and physics behind it and a lot of other things. Everybody feels like a bit of an electrician simply by changing that blown fuse or plugging things in just right or wiring up that complicated TV/VCR/DVD/stereo entertainment center you?ve just bought. You wire it up, plug it in and somehow it all works without any sparks or problems and you feel like you could have been an electrician if you?d really wanted to. Wrong. There is a world of difference between plugging things in and being an electrician. To begin with the body of mathematics behind electrical work is impressive. Electricity is measured in volts and is a function of voltage, current and resistance - all factors with a complex mathematical relationship. There are laws, not the building codes set in place by municipal governments to insure the safety of houses and commercial buildings, but mathematical laws proven with chalkboards of bizarre looking figures that prove how electricity will function under different circumstances. And there are unions. In fact the Electrical Workers Union (EWU) is one of the strongest unions in America protecting the integrity of the profession from scammers and schemers. Electricians Info provides detailed information about electrician jobs, schools, training, tools, licenses, and services. Electricians Info is the sister site of Circuit Breakers Web.

PHPBB: You Can Simplify the Set Up Process!

Author : Matthew C. Keegan
In several previous articles I mentioned my having downloaded and installed the fantastic PHPBB open source forum. I shared with readers the lengthy and tedious process of selecting the right mirror, downloading the files to my computer, and following all the long, drawn out, and complicated set up steps. Fortunately, what was once a procedure that took the better part of a day can now take 30 minutes or less to complete! LetÂ’s take a look how you can shorten the entire set up process and start benefiting from this free, popular program.

When I set up my first two PHPBB forums in June 2005, I did so under duress. Just days earlier, my then message board host Ââ€" EZBoard Ââ€" had their entire system shut down by hackers. Or so they claimed. My two popular sites, the Aviation Employment Board and the Corporate Flight Attendant Community were left in the dark as EZBoardÂ’s system rendered the sites virtually inoperable. With a repair promised, but several weeks away, I decided that I needed to quickly move away from EZBoard and over to a forum where I could exercise full control. Enter PHPBB.

Because I needed to use a cumbersome EZBoard converter file to transfer threads over to the new site, I had to take the long way of setting up my new forums. Indeed, the converter file was imperfect and quite a number of threads never made the transition. Still, when all was said and done, the new forums were light years ahead of EZBoard.

Since setting up my first two forums, I had to set up a third forum for a customer. This time, I chose the quick route by setting up the forum through my web hosting company. As is the practice of some web hosts, fully set up forums are available for your downloading. Simply select a web host offering this feature, establish your database with them [usually MySQL], and download the files. Within minutes, a fully usable forum will be established on your site and all you have to do is set up the forum parameters and then you are ready to go.

PHPBB is a terrific forum, one that doesnÂ’t charge set up fees or an annual license charge [unlike vBulletin] and is certain to help you make your site a success. Download PHPBB today to get started on building your online community!

Totally Terrific Tools to Turn On Unmotivated, Indifferent, Failing Students

Author : Ruth Wells
Teachers, they don't give you motivation-makers
when you are in college. It takes about 2 minutes
in the classroom to realize that you could have
really used courses on motivating the motionless.
From our popular workshops, books and posters,
here are just a few of our favorite motivation-
makers that you will use everyday.** For kids who often complain about where they ended up, you can
encourage them to "bloom where they are planted." This is a
wonderful intervention for foster kids in particular.** For kids who can't imagine ever having a positive future, or any
future at all, ask them to write a letter to you as though it was the
year 2045. In the letter, the youth can describe what happened
to them since they last saw you. For non-writers, they can draw or
make an audiotape instead of writing, or, you can write for them.** For kids who are "wrapped in barbed wire," their apathy and
harshness hiding a very gentle and vulnerable child, ask them to
decide which they would rather have: "a bruised heart or a boxed
heart?"** When you ask a child what they want to be when they grow up,
and you hear back, "I don't care," instead of confronting
that, say back: "Well, if you did care..." This potent intervention
detours beautifully around answers that normally would keep the
child from even speculating about positive outcomes. The child
gets to hang onto their discouragement while doing the work that
you wanted them to do. This unusual intervention works with nearly
any answer that a child gives you. For example, when the child says
"I don't know what I want to be when I grow up," you can respond
with "Well, if you did know..."** For kids who can't imagine a future that is positive, have them
make their "Future Homes and Gardens" using art supplies. They
can draw floor plans or design rooms of their future dream home.
You may be surprised at the results you get from the most sullen
and resentful kids.** For counselors, social workers and mental health workers only
to use (carefully) to better "open up" very defensive, apathetic
youth, this next intervention is very powerful. Ask the child to
make a life line. They make the life line by writing their major
life events on file cards. Next, they string the cards onto a
piece of ribbon or string. This is their life line. If you doubt the
effectiveness of this intervention, make your own life line. If
you aren't moved by the experience, you must have had an easy
life. Only clinicians should use this devices as it must be used
with extreme care as it can stir up much emotion in some
children. Avoid this exercise with depressed kids.** For kids that complain that school is boring, I'll just go on
welfare, respond, "Yes, you are right. School is boring. Nothing
like the excitement of the welfare office line." This intervention
is not for every kid; use it only with youth who would respond to
this type of humorous, edgy intervention.** For kids who view school or job training as a waste of their
time, have them list their current job skills, then have them determine
where their skills will fit best: in the current or past century. Teach
kids that 80% of the jobs that will exist for them are not even known
yet. These jobs will require computer skills, math skills, writing skills
etc. Do their skills fit that or jobs from the past?** For kids who plan to use illegal activities as their source of future
income, recap local, state and federal law. For example, depending on
which laws they break, offenders can lose not only the money gained
by illegal actions, but also their home, possessions and vehicles. Under
some federal laws, the homes and possessions of relatives and friends
may be seized even if these items weren't directly involved in the
commission of the crime. Illegal activities are not as lucrative as
your kids tell you. Auto theft generates about $18,000 per year,
for example, far less than what a typical high school grad earns.** For kids who insist crime is lucrative, have them guess the likely
income from crime, then have them guess how much time in jail they
will face, and the number of years they will have before being
incarcerated. Then ask the youth to calculate how much they
really earned. For example, if a youth earned $30,000 per year
for 2 years before being incarcerated, then was jailed for 2 years,
that works out to a just $15,000 per year, an amount that is vastly
less than a high school grad earns. Plus, the grad's earnings cannot be
confiscated but the offender's earnings can.** For kids who plan to just rely on welfare, advise them to hurry
and get on it fast before welfare goes away.Get much more information on this topic at

Considering a Pet Bird? Ask Yourself These 7 Critical Questions

Job Search Tips for Hispanic Job Seekers

Author : Simone Emmons

Finding a job has become much more of a challenge in recent years. Using the Internet as an additional resource will increase your options to find many great job opportunities, which are not always advertised in the newspaper. Many employers will place an online advertisement in conjunction with or in place of an ad in the local newspaper. Job boards, as they are called, allow you to search online among many jobs in your category of choice. They allow you to narrow down prospects, and many will even provide a direct link to a company"s Web site, fax and e-mail address. Through job boards, the submission of resumes is almost exclusively done in the form of e-mail correspondence. This offers benefits to jobseekers as well as to the employers. Sending resumes by e-mail saves time and money. You dont need to buy envelopes and stamps and go to the post office, then wait for a few days until the company receives and reviews your resume. When employers receive the resume through an e-mail they will be able to respond much quicker to those whom they think might have potential.

Use of a home computer is the easiest way to manage your job-seeking strategies. However, if you don"t have a home PC, you have other options available to you. Many libraries, cafes (some are exclusively set up for the purpose of providing Internet connection), employment offices and copy centers have computers available either for free or a nominal charge. You can browse the Internet, print up resumes for interviews and e-mail your resume to employers easily. If you don"t have an e-mail account you can also set up a free e-mail account through any number of services like Yahoo or HotMail.

Simone Emmons, human resources expert for 18 years and founder of Hispanic-Jobs.com & Asian-Jobs.com (2 niche Web site that have thousands of jobs listed by leading companies) has put together a list of some tips to follow in order to achieve success in your job search. Here are some of her most important pointers:

-- Follow directions: Always follow the specific instructions for applying for a job included in the employment posting. For example, some companies write "To apply please e-mail your resume with salary history to...." You should then e-mail your resume and not forget the salary history. When companies instruct you to go to a specific Web site and apply in this fashion, do not just e-mail your resume instead. Pay attention to the details in the employment description and follow exactly the steps an employer requests. There are often reasons why a company wants specific information, and job seekers should pay attention to those details. Otherwise, you may never make it to the interview. Employers may feel that if you can"t pay attention to their simple requests, you might not be able to pay attention to details in the position you are hired for.

-- Resume tips: Your resume and cover letter are the first items that will reach an employer"s desk. Therefore, you want them to best reflect you as an applicant. Be careful when composing a resume. Spelling errors, grammatical mistakes and the like will quickly put your resume in the trashcan. Before finalizing your resume always use the spell check in the word processing software you are using. Highlight the skills that will be applied to this new position, and showcase your strengths. Remember, an employer will only spend a few minutes looking over your resume, so make sure it will stand out from the others. Never send your resume without a cover letter. Some companys recruit for many positions at the same time so always mention the position you are applying for.

You may use this article on your website providing you include the active link to our website.

Tuxedo Types for Different Occasions

Author : Smartfinds

Selecting the tuxedo formal wear for your event is simple once you understand the tuxedo types and the formality the occasion or event. You can then match the type of coat with the affair and then add your accessories accordingly. Lets start by taking a look at wedding tuxedos. When it comes to weddings, most people focus on the bride's gown, as well as the gowns worn by the bridal party. However, finding the right tuxedo for the groom and his groomsmen can also be just as challenging. Since there are so many different choices from which to choose, the best thing you can do is educate yourself on all the options so you can choose exactly what you want. The tuxedo does have to work with the body type of the man. While a man may not tell anyone how important this is to him, the truth is that it is. To help you make best choice for a groom or groomsmen's tuxedo take a look at the below list of possibilities to consider.Semiformal Weddings - for a daytime wedding, you want a dark gray or black sack coat or gray waistcoat, a white pleated or off white standard shirt, long necktie, and black business shoes. For an evening wedding, choose a dark tuxedo or business suit, white shirt, and coordinating shoes for a winter wedding and for the summer, a lighter colored or navy business suit, or tuxedo, white shirt, long necktie, and coordinating shoesFormal Weddings - for a daytime wedding, choose a gray or black morning coat, also known as a cutaway cost, or gray waistcoat with gray, striped trousers, a stiffly starched white turn with turndown collar or dress ascot, gray gloves, and black, patent leather shoes. If the wedding will be held in the evening, then you want to wear a black tailcoat and matching trousers, a white pique waistcoat, white, bosom shirt with wing collar that has been starched, a white bowtie, white gloves, and black patent leather shoes. In choosing the right style of formal wear, consider the time of day your event starts, the formality of the event, and the dress requirements listed on your invitation. The tuxedo formal wear you decide upon may be a simple tuxedo, or something more elegant.Cutaway coat - a long coat usually in dark grey, worn in morning weddings.Designer - fashion formal wear uniquely designed by the top menswear names, such as Calvin Klein, After Six, Fumagelli, Geoffrey Beene, Giorgio Bissoni, Neil Allyn, and Manzoni.Dinner jacket - formal standard length evening jacket with notched or shawl collar, in white or ivory only.Director's suit - similar to a business jacket, worn for a daytime formal wedding only.Full dress tails or tailcoat - short in the front and long in the back, the black coat for the most formal occasions.Regular coat - the formal coat length which extends to the second knuckle, worn at daytime or evening occasions.Stroller - daytime formal coat with a regular cut but does not have a satin lapel, worn with contrasting vest and a four-in-hand tie.Tails - high end formal dress coat with a cosmetic vent in the back of the coat, creating the rear tails. Reserved for the ultra formal, evening occasions.Tuxedo - the standard formal coat length, with single or double breasted satin lapels. Common word to describe all mens formal wear. Suitable for almost all formal occasions, including weddings, prom and tux required events.Vintage or Classic - outdated styles that are no longer manufactured but still classic formal wear.Waist coat / Eton / Spencer - a coat that is tight fitting and ends at the waist. Worn at evening functions with matching or contrasting trousers.Lets not forget the color issue too. Black or grey formal wear offers timeless elegance. To add a touch of color, accent your look with a colored vest, pocket square or cummerbund. White tuxedos are only for certain tropical climates; it is best to avoid them. Pastel colored tuxedos are starting to come back, but steer clear of them. Even selecting a colored vest can be tricky you may not match the colors the bride or your date will be wearing.Lastly, did you know you can own a tuxedo for the same price as renting one? To Lead or Not to Lead?

Author : Damon Smith
Working with Leads or Opt-In Clients can be very confusing at times, Some people will tell you that Leads are not a good source of advertising while others will say that you can not get much better ways of Advertising..It all depends on what source of leads you are using that will give you the best results. FFA and Classified leads are ones that you should NOT use. The reason is that most of these leads are dead the day they are posted. People wast time and money using these types of leads because the person that posted at the FFA or Classified site are using a JUNK Email address so that they dont get swamped with returned email. So what kind of Marketing Leads work?I am glad you asked! Optin and Double Optin Leads are the ones that you need to be using for two reasons.(#1) These are people that ASKED or filled out a form on a site for more information on marketing,advertising,home-businesses and things like that.(#2) Double Optin Leads are the best you can get for your time and money. These are people that took the time to wait for a email message from the company and then clicked on a link for more information.Working with these people are very rewarding. You are not only getting people that are looking for information that you have but you are also targeting your clients. When companys like SimplerLeads.com search for these people they make it a point to make sure that they are looking for your product or service. The only other option then using leads is having your own list of contacts. People that have asked to join your list for more information. Having access to these contacts on a daily bases will get them into joining your service or affiliate program. This means money in your pocket for as long as they stay with your service.Of course the best thing to do is get on a personal level with your contacts. The Internet is so UN-Personal that it is really sad. Most business owners are in the business for a income and not for friendship. Affiliate programs are a great source of income. But allot of good they will be if you have no one to work with you in your team.Buying leads and getting to know the people that are looking to you for advice is your #1 goal. When you send a email to your leads make sure that you get personal with them and let them know you are there to help, Not just to make money from them. In the long run you will see that the list of Leads that you bought will not only work with you but they will work for you!About The AuthorDamon Smith is the Publisher for HaileysComet Weekly Ezine. Dynamic Workshops - Success Rules to Practice

Author : Chris King
Proper Preparation and Practice Prevent Poor Performance.Even though the structure of a workshop may appear to be looser and more flexible than other presentations, it is imperative to be properly prepared – even more prepared than for other venues. In the type of workshop I prefer and give the most often, I gear it toward those who are in attendance. This means that I have to be prepared for a variety of situations, because everyone is different. Their feedback, questions, comments and needs are all different. If I am giving a two-hour workshop, I have enough material and activities planned for at least four hours, so that if one of my plans doesn't work for this particular group, I have another direction I can switch to with ease.Plan transitions with care.Smooth transitions are important during any kind of presentation. If we jump from one topic to another too quickly and without any warning, or what I call "bridging," we can leave our audience behind, so that they miss some of the new material and/or topic area. Just a short introductory sentence or description of where and why we are going in a certain direction should suffice. You can tell a brief story, sum up what you have been saying, ask a question or introduce the next topic with some sort of attention getting device.Don't hesitate to give assignments and/or homework.Preferring workshops that continue at least into a second week, I always give the participants assignments to work on (with the statement that "there will be no punishment for not doing the homework"). A good number do work on the assignments and are delighted and proud to share their results. The more we expect from our students, the more they will expect from themselves and make the effort to please themselves and us.Remember that Murphy's Law is usually working. So what can go wrong, will. Patricia Fripp, a well known speaker once said "Never assume, always confirm." To the point of almost seeming obsessive, I feel that getting in touch with the meeting planner to confirm time, date, and location, along with what is expected of me and what I expect in the way of equipment and setup is imperative.Otherwise, we may find that somewhere along the line, there has been some miscommunication which can prove to be disastrous. Also, think of all of the things that might go wrong – your handouts didn't arrive, the bulb on the projector blows the minute you turn it on, the directions of how to get there are incorrect, and on and on. Just leave earlier than you need to, so that you will have lots of extra time to take care of any unforeseen problems and details that might occur. Finally, make sure that you are having FUN!By approaching every workshop with the attitude that it's going to be a blast, you will guarantee that the participants will have fun too. In addition, realize that people learn in the proportion to the amount of fun they are having!Chris King is a professional speaker, storyteller, writer, website creator / designer, free agent, and fitness instructor.
